I am excited to share an intriguing project I recently completed as part of my INFO 204 Information Professions graduate course at San Jose State University (SJSU). This assignment allowed me to dive deep into the world of contemporary library design, exploring the innovative ways they are evolving to meet the needs of today’s patrons.
I conceptualized a library for this project that integrates cutting-edge virtual services with beloved traditional offerings. Inspired by the themes discussed in our lectures on virtual services, community engagement, and the evolving roles of information professionals, I designed a library that reflects technological advancements and timeless values.
Part 1: Description: Mission, Services, Collection and Sister Library

Description:
Welcome to the Sebeok Library, an emblem of enlightenment and discovery strategically located within the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This institution is a tribute to Thomas Sebeok, an imaginative thinker who envisioned a fictive “atomic priesthood” that would serve to educate future generations about the dawn and evolution of the atomic age. The name Sebeok Library encapsulates the essence of this vision, serving as an educational hub for young people to explore the intricate history and ongoing development of nuclear technology.
Not just a repository of information, Sebeok Library is a vibrant educational community that echoes the sentiments expressed by Sandra Hirsh in “Information Services Today.” It is the epicenter of learning in the digital era, where school libraries transform into dynamic spaces for instruction, mentoring, and the facilitation of formal and informal learning processes (Hirsh, 2023, p. 268). Our librarians embody the role of educators and mentors, providing the necessary resources, tools, and connections to nurture inquiry, foster information literacy, and support the curriculum while developing unique relationships with learners.
The Sebeok Library is a dynamic and essential entity intertwined with our community’s educational and strategic priorities. It is brimming with intelligent, diverse thinkers and future leaders, offering an interdisciplinary nexus for collaboration, discourse, and discovery. The library’s commitment to social justice, equity, diversity, inclusion (EDI), accessibility, and the unrelenting pursuit of truth and knowledge is evident in its operations. It aligns with the values of academic libraries to support and enhance their institutions’ educational and research missions (Hirsh, 2023, p. 292).
Our library embraces the evolving role of public libraries in addressing equity issues, positioning itself as a proactive community hub that builds meaningful relationships and adapts quickly to societal changes. The Sebeok Library exemplifies cultural competence, opening its doors to the community as experts, collaborators, and neighbors, thereby ensuring that the library is seen—and supported—as a vital, responsive, and inclusive space (Hirsh, 2023, p. 321).
Moreover, the Sebeok Library represents special libraries’ unique and varied landscape. It harnesses advanced technologies to manage and interpret large data sets, knowledge, and information, catering to the specialized needs of its patrons with a focus on nuclear history and technology. This specialization offers numerous opportunities for engagement, collaboration, and independent research, significantly advancing the organizations and communities it serves (Hirsh, 2023, p. 354).

Within the innovative landscape of the Sebeok Library, we are excited to introduce two virtual services uniquely designed to enhance our community’s access to our rich collection of nuclear science and history resources. These services aim to expand our reach and provide immersive and interactive learning experiences from the comfort of one’s home. Understanding the potential hesitance and concerns our staff might have towards adopting new technologies, we are committed to ensuring a smooth transition and demonstrating the profound impact these services can have on our library’s mission and users’ experiences (Hirsch, 2023).
Virtual Reality (VR) Tours of Nuclear Science and History
- Service Description:
Leveraging VR technology, the Sebeok Library offers virtual reality tours that allow users to explore nuclear science and history in an immersive 3D environment. These tours provide a unique educational experience, transporting users to historical sites, nuclear facilities, and museum exhibitions. Through detailed reconstructions and interactive elements, users can engage with exhibits, conduct virtual experiments, and attend lectures and workshops led by experts, all within a virtual space.
- Staff Motivation and Training:
To motivate and assure our staff of the benefits of this technology, we will offer comprehensive training sessions highlighting the ease of use and the educational value of VR tours. By showcasing successful case studies and user testimonials, staff will see firsthand how these tours can enhance learning and engagement. Training will focus on technical competency, content creation, and effective communication strategies to guide users through virtual experiences (Hirsch, 2023).
- Encouraging User Adoption:
To motivate library users to embrace this new technology, we will launch an introductory VR event, offering guided virtual tours and showcasing the potential of VR to transform educational experiences. By highlighting the interactive and immersive aspects of VR tours, we aim to spark curiosity and excitement among our users. We will also offer “VR Discovery Kits” for checkout, allowing users to experience virtual tours from home, further bridging the gap between traditional and digital learning environments.
Online Nuclear Science and History Forums
- Service Description:
The Sebeok Library will establish a series of online forums and discussion groups hosted on platforms like Discord or Slack. These forums will serve as dynamic spaces for learners, researchers, and enthusiasts to share insights, discuss nuclear science and history topics, and participate in scheduled talks and workshops with experts. This service encourages ongoing learning and community building beyond the physical confines of the library.
- Staff Motivation and Training: To address potential staff concerns about managing and participating in online forums, we will provide targeted training on digital communication, moderation skills, and the strategic use of these platforms to foster engaging discussions and collaborations. Staff will learn about the platforms’ features, how to facilitate engaging online events, and best practices for creating a respectful and informative online community (Hirsch, 2023).
- Encouraging User Adoption:
To engage library users with our online forums, we will host kickoff events featuring prominent speakers and interactive sessions demonstrating the forums’ value as platforms for learning and discussion. We will highlight success stories of community engagement and learning outcomes achieved through these forums. Additionally, by integrating forum participation with our physical events and providing exclusive content and discussions online, we will create a compelling reason for users to join and actively participate in our digital community.
By introducing these virtual services, the Sebeok Library aims to extend its educational outreach and foster a deeper connection with its community, encouraging exploration and learning in nuclear science and history. Our commitment to staff training and user engagement ensures that these technologies will be embraced as valuable tools in our mission to educate and inspire (Hirsch, 2023).

This sisterhood aims to enrich the educational landscape for audiences in Europe, the US, and globally, including International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions’ (IFLA) partners by sharing collections and exhibitions. The IFLA, as a leading body in the library and information services sector, champions the cause of information access, professional development, and the protection of users’ rights, making it an integral support structure for this transatlantic partnership.
This alliance leverages the Nuclear Museum’s vast artifact collection, the Deutsches Museum’s vast resources in science and technology and the Sebeok Library’s specialized focus on archives regarding nuclear science, facilitating a comprehensive exploration of the atomic age’s innovations and historical complexities. Through this partnership, all institutions underscore the importance of technological advancements and their historical contexts, enhancing global access to knowledge and promoting a deeper understanding of nuclear science’s role in shaping the modern world.
The union between the Sebeok Library, The National Museum of Nuclear History and Technology, and the Deutsches Museum Library exemplifies a significant partnership to enhance access to nuclear science and technology history. Your innovation and commitment have not gone unnoticed, and I am genuinely grateful for your positive impact on our patrons and community. Encouragement: The Value of Interpersonal Communications As we continue to evolve and introduce new virtual programs—from online reference services to interactive information sessions—it is crucial to emphasize the value of strong interpersonal communication. Our interactions, whether internal among staff or external with our patrons and community, are foundational to our success. Highlight – Rose recently successfully resolved a patron’s complex inquiry through a detailed virtual chat session. This exchange solved the issue and built a deeper trust and rapport with the patron, showcasing the power of empathetic and clear communication. Highlight – In a recent community feedback session conducted via Zoom, Carla actively listened to patrons’ suggestions for new online programs. This open dialogue led to implementing a highly requested virtual book club, significantly increasing patron engagement and satisfaction. Anecdote Let me share a quick story to highlight the importance of active listening. Last month, during a staff meeting, Alex mentioned offhandedly his struggle with managing online event notifications. Rather than dismissing this as a minor issue, the team actively listened, realizing that our patrons might be, too, if Alex faced this challenge. This led to a brainstorming session that resulted in a revamped notification system, significantly improving our service delivery and user experience. Closing Thoughts Our ability to communicate effectively and listen actively is more than a skill—it is a bridge to understanding, collaboration, and innovation. As we move forward, let us continue to nurture these abilities, remembering that they are essential tools in our mission to connect, educate, and inspire our community. Announcement of New Funding and Technological Service Exciting news! We have received funding for a new technological service. We are introducing a virtual reality (VR) experience zone, bringing history, science, and literature to life for our patrons.
